By Rob Coldwell, Co-Founder & CEO, Rentwell

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the future of Rentwell. Not next quarter. Not next year. The next twenty years.

When Emma and I started this company in 2008, we weren’t trying to build a large property management company. We were trying to build something that reflected our values and created opportunity through real estate. In the years since, we’ve expanded, we’ve contracted, we’ve made great decisions, and we’ve made mistakes. We’ve managed through difficult markets, helped hundreds of owners, served thousands of residents, renovated properties, built systems, hired incredible people, and learned lessons no textbook could ever teach.

Some of those seasons tested us. Those are usually the ones that taught us the most.

Over the years I’ve talked about writing a book, building a playbook, recording podcasts, documenting what we’ve learned. Some of those ideas never became reality, and I take responsibility for that. This time feels different, not because the idea itself is better, but because I’ve committed real, blocked time to it, every week, treated with the same priority as any major client meeting or strategic initiative.

Why We’re Doing This

Every property we manage, every renovation we complete, every owner we advise, every mistake we’ve learned from, every system we’ve built: it all contains knowledge that should be preserved. Not for marketing. For stewardship.

Our mission has always been simple: we create the opportunity for wealth and freedom through real estate investing. Education is one of the most powerful ways we know how to live that out.

That’s what the Rentwell Library is: a long-term collection of white papers, playbooks, podcasts, and educational resources built to capture what we’ve learned over nearly two decades in this business.

The First White Paper

Our first publication is titled Why Most 2–30 Unit Apartment Buildings Underperform.

It isn’t a brochure encouraging people to hire Rentwell. It’s an educational resource built to help owners of small and mid-size apartment buildings think differently about how they operate. If someone finishes reading it and walks away a better operator, whether or not they ever become a Rentwell client, we’ve done our job. That’s the standard we’re holding ourselves to.

Where This Goes From Here

Apartment buildings are just the starting point. Over time, we plan to build out additional series covering single-family homes, rowhomes, and condominiums; asset management; redevelopment and renovation; leadership; operations; and real estate investing more broadly. Eventually, we hope these publications become part of how every new Rentwell team member learns not just what we do, but why we do it.

This is also a team effort. While I’m writing much of the content myself, it reflects conversations with, and the collective experience of, the people across our company who do this work every day.

A Personal Commitment

I want to be direct about one thing: I’ve talked about projects like this before, and not all of them made it across the finish line. This one is different, not because I’m making a bigger promise, but because I’m making a smaller one. I’m committing to consistent, weekly progress, not a single grand announcement.

My goal isn’t just to publish a white paper. It’s to build something that keeps serving owners, employees, interns, and our communities long after it’s written.

We’re building something special: one property, one relationship, and one person at a time. This is the next chapter of that.

Stay tuned for the release of our first white paper, and follow along as we continue building the Rentwell Library.
