Your Documents Can Now Talk Back: The NotebookLM Feature That’s Changing How People Learn
Most of us have a pile of things we’re supposed to have read. A strategic document. A market report. An online course module. A book that’s been sitting on the nightstand. The information is there. The time and mental energy to absorb it — that’s the bottleneck.
TJ Hock of Rentwell shared a use case at the April 2026 DIG Philly meeting that reframes this problem entirely. He took Rentwell’s Vivid Vision — a detailed document describing where the company is headed and what it’s trying to become — and fed it into NotebookLM.
What came back wasn’t a summary. It was a podcast.
What NotebookLM Actually Does With Your Content
NotebookLM takes whatever you give it — a document, a PDF, a video, a web link, course materials — and converts it into multiple formats designed for different ways of learning. The same source material becomes a video, a mind map, an interactive study guide, or an audio conversation.
NotebookLM generates a two-host conversation — a man and a woman — who discuss the content you’ve uploaded as if they’re recording an episode about it. They cover the key ideas, reference specific details from the document, and engage with the material the way a good podcast actually does: not just reciting information, but contextualizing it, connecting threads, and making it digestible.
What makes it genuinely remarkable is that it’s not static. You can interject. Ask a question mid-conversation. The hosts respond to you, drawing from the source material to answer. It’s a document that talks back.
TJ’s example with the Vivid Vision is particularly instructive for business owners. A Vivid Vision is one of the more important documents a company can produce — a detailed picture of where the business is going, meant to align everyone around a shared direction. But getting a team to actually read and internalize a multi-page strategic document is notoriously difficult. Converting it into a podcast that team members can listen to on the way to a job site or during their morning routine removes the friction almost entirely.
